Jewish Holidays – Pesach – Passover

Posted by genglish on June 3rd, 2011 and filed under Jewish Holidays | No Comments »

Of all the jewish holidays, Pesach is the one most commonly observed, even by otherwise non-observant Jews. According to the 1990 National Jewish Population Survey (NJPS), more than 80% of Jews have attended a Pesach seder.

Pesach begins on the 15th day of the Jewish month of Nissan. It is the first of the three major festivals with both historical and agricultural significance (the other two are Shavu’ot and Sukkot). Agriculturally, it represents the beginning of the harvest season in Israel, but little attention is paid to this aspect of the holiday. The primary observances of Pesach are related to the Exodus from Egypt after generations of slavery. This story is told in Exodus, Ch. 1-15. Many of the Pesach observances are instituted in Chs. 12-15.

Sukkot: Back to Basics

Posted by genglish on April 14th, 2011 and filed under Jewish Holidays | 25 Comments »

Sukkot is the happiest Jewish holiday. We live in huts, have parties, wave a lulav and etrog around and eat tons of food. What could be wrong with that?

King Solomon stars in the book of Ecclesiastes, which can get kind of gloomy. And we read it during Sukkot!

Hadara Levin-Areddy, a great Israeli singer/songwriter, connects the dots, singing about sadness, joy, and what’s new under the sun.

Portrait Paintings of Gedolim – Jewish Rabbis & More

Posted by genglish on January 5th, 2011 and filed under Jewish Art | No Comments »

http://www.ashvilart.com/

About the Artist:

Sigalit Ashvil-Bibi was born in Kutaissi, Georgia, in the USSR, in 1952. She graduated from the high school of Music and Art in Kutaissi, USSR, in 1969, and from the Academy of Arts, in Tbilisi, USSR, in 1973. She served an apprenticeship with a well-known professor in art, Mordechai Dzanashvili, from 1973-1983, and continued her art training at the New York Academy of Art from 1991-1993.

Ashvil is a realistic painter & takes great liberties with being a realist, as her aim is not to reproduce a likeness, but to paint the subject with a soul and give the viewer an inner vision of whom the subject is.

Today, being multi-talented as a piano teacher, having more than 35 years of experience, she is a beginner, intermediate and advanced specialist with a special approach for individual needs. She continues to exhibit her works with each of her annual recitals. She is a subject of biographical record in the Who’s Who in American Art and Who’s Who in the World for her outstanding achievements.

Today she is highly recognized in both Israel and the U.S.A. for her diversity and ingenuity, especially in portrait painting.

When asked about her greatest accomplishments, Ashvil immediately points to her rabbinical portraits:

“I want my art to capture the essence of the soul of all that is good and true, so that people can catch at least a glimmer of it and pursue it in their lives.”

InOverOurHeads Jewish Reality TV – “Living Waters” – segment 1 of 3

Posted by genglish on October 15th, 2010 and filed under Jewish TV | No Comments »

InOverOurHeads, the first unscripted Jewish reality television series, is now on the first global network devoted to what it means to be Jewish, JLTV – the Jewish Life Television Network. InOverOurHeads sneaks a peek at the crazy lives of a few close friends. Coping with the realities of their restless existence as young, Jewish parents, they debate the absurd, laugh at convention, and reevaluate their ideals in a humorous, yet introspective way. Maintaining a decorum not quite fitting for shul [synagogue, the topics wander into sensitive areas such as marriage, parenting, religion, gender issues, and education. The discussions are honest and irreverent, often with a deep spiritual undertone. They rip apart stereotypes of observant Jews – although like most Jews, they hardly ever agree. InOverOurHeads airs Tuesdays at 8pm Eastern and 9pm Pacific, broadcasting nationwide on DirecTV channel 366, in select metropolitan areas via nationwide affiliations with Time Warner and Comcast, and online at www.jltv.tv. (Please see www.inoverourheads.com for additional air times.) JLTV currently reaches 26 million homes and is anticipated to expand to 40 million homes by year end.

Jewish Holidays – Shmini Atzeret & Simchat Torah

Posted by genglish on July 30th, 2010 and filed under Jewish Holidays | 2 Comments »

http://israelnjudaism.blogspot.com/

http://israelpalestine-speedy.blogspot.com/

Tishri 22, the day after the seventh day of Sukkot, is the holiday Shemini Atzeret. In Israel, Shemini Atzeret is also the holiday of Simchat Torah. Outside of Israel, where extra days of holidays are held, only the second day of Shemini Atzeret is Simchat Torah: Shemini Atzeret is Tishri 22 and 23, while Simchat Torah is Tishri 23.

These two holidays are commonly thought of as part of Sukkot, but that is technically incorrect; Shemini Atzeret is a holiday in its own right and does not involve some of the special observances of Sukkot. We do not take up the lulav and etrog on these days, and our dwelling in the sukkah is more limited, and performed without reciting a blessing.
