Jewish Holidays – Pesach – Passover

Of all the jewish holidays, Pesach is the one most commonly observed, even by otherwise non-observant Jews. According to the 1990 National Jewish Population Survey (NJPS), more than 80% of Jews have attended a Pesach seder.

Pesach begins on the 15th day of the Jewish month of Nissan. It is the first of the three major festivals with both historical and agricultural significance (the other two are Shavu’ot and Sukkot). Agriculturally, it represents the beginning of the harvest season in Israel, but little attention is paid to this aspect of the holiday. The primary observances of Pesach are related to the Exodus from Egypt after generations of slavery. This story is told in Exodus, Ch. 1-15. Many of the Pesach observances are instituted in Chs. 12-15.

We’re really excited about the new CD, and we think it’s by far our best yet. This one’s a bit of a departure from the formula of our first three. We’ve got some new original material we hope you’re going to love, but this time we also recorded quite a few more cover tunes — some of our favorite songs by other artists that we love to sing on Shabbat gigs — in the form of four epic medleys. Then, we invited some of our jewish music celebrity friends to sing with us. Zmanim features guest appearances on lead vocals from 8th Day, Yitzy Spinner, Aryeh Kunstler, Pey Dalid and Jewish Star junior finalist Shmuly Brafman. And of course, we’re up to our old hijinks again with a new parody, and we had a blast filming the video for it. We’re very excited for that premiere. Zmanim is without a doubt our most ambitious project to date, and we can’t wait for you to hear it!

Artist Talk | Susan Hiller

How does a contemporary artist represent the lost history of German-Jewish life? Susan Hiller, a film and video artist, spent three years photographing more than 300 street signs all over Germany whose names refer to a previous Jewish presence. The result, the exhibition “The J.Street Project”, uses the apparent banality of street names to explore unexpected ways that landscape can memorialize a people’s history.

Hiller, who lives in London, took visitors through the exhibition, explaining both her artistic process and her unique approach to connecting landscape and history.
