Charlie Chaplin in the role of the jewish
barber. This film made in 1940, after
Kristallnacht 1938, predicted many of the
tragic events that would affect European
jewry in the period 1940-1945, including
the extermination camps. Charlie Chaplin was truly a genius.

    Ah, thank you very much. I thought I knew it. That’s well done, I think, because in this scene Chaplin is very much the Little Tramp: the way he walks, lifts his hat and sniffs at the flower. Later he transforms into the barber, who has some elements of the Tramp, but is a new figure all the same.
    Absolutely gorgeous films, both The Kid and The Great Dictator.
