Favorite Jewish Artists: Itzchak Tarkay

Itzchak Tarkay is another of my favorite jewish artists. Born in Northern Serbia in 1935, he was only nine years old when the Nazis sent him to the Mathausen concentration camp. After the war, he returned home and developed an interest in art. He immigrated to Israel in 1949 and soon began to study in the Bezalel Art Academy. His colorful paintings of women have become extremely popular in recent years. It is said that Tarkay always paints his women with their eyes cast down as his way of honoring those who did not survive the Nazi camps.
