It’s the number one topic on the world’s political agenda. It’s considered more important than the Iranian nuclear threat or the Iraqi war. The drive for a State in Palestine gains constant momentum, propelled by the iron will of the international community. The Palestine issue is entrenched in the collective conciousness as the single most urgent obstacle to peace in the Middle East, and, by proxy, the world.
And yet, even as road maps and initiatives fly, there seems to be a need to get back to the basic fundamentals of the issue at hand. Since we are talking about a specific people (Palestinians) and a specific geographic landmass (Palestine), these obvious details should surely at this point be redundant. That would be the case, except for the fact that the negotiators are still debating “Israel’s right to exist”. Since there is clearly some doubt cast over the basic geographic realities on the ground, there is a growing, urgent need to set the record straight.
So where is Palestine?
Well, it depends who you ask. You may be given any number of the folowing answers: Israel, Judea and Samaria, The West Bank and Gaza, Jerusalem, somewhere in the Middle East….. These are the vague responses offered by the world’s major media outlets, political delegations, United Nations, Arab experts and even, sadly, some marginal Israeli public doctrine.
The correct answer is, all of the above, and Jordan. That is: Jordan, Israel’s neighbour, with whom they share their modern beginnings, a peace treaty, a border, and a common problem: the Palestinians.
Formal use of the term ‘Palestine” returned after WWI. The 1916 Sykes-Picot agreement to divide the remains of the Ottoman Empire between the British and French rapidly paved the way for the San Remo Conference and then League of Nations approval of the British Mandate for Palestine in 1922. That geographic area included what is Israel and Jordan today. During the intervening years the British had meanwhile handed over 77% of Palestine, the land east of the jordan river, to Emir Abdullah for administration: Transjordan, today known as Jordan. The other 23%, via the Balfour Declaration, formally accepted by the League of Nations, was slated for a Jewish national homeland, today known as Israel.
By the time the British Mandate for Palestine was formally signed, the area formerly known singularly as Palestine had come to be known as Palestine and Transjordan. Palestine had now legally and officially been divided between Jew and Arab, into 2 sovereign states, 23% for the Jews and 77% for the Arabs, in an international agreement.
From this point onward, history seems to have been frozen in time. Due to an administrative slip of the tongue, the world’s collective memory has forgotten that Palestine comprised both Israel and Jordan. The world has forgotten that for decades both Jews and Arabs were known as Palestinians. At no time was there ever a single sovereign nation, or people, of Palestine. In fact, Jordan today comprises over 65% of Palestinians. Israel (including all territories) comprises less than 50%.
What is patently obvious is that trying to solve a geographic problem with the wrong map is bound for disaster. What is not so clear is why such a simple historical fact has been forgotten, or far more sinister, ignored. What is required today is a fresh start. Let’s call it the Trio, since the world seems to respond to classical music these days.
The Trio would be comprised of Israel, Jordan, and the British. The 2 successor sovereign states of the British Mandate for Palestine, guided by their original benefactor. Whether there need be a third state in Palestine or not, let the original sovereign signatories expand or contract their own borders to solve both their growing demographic crises. Following that initiative, the Trio could become a new Quartet, to include the deserving Americans. Or a Quintet, say, if the Palestinians were to renounce terror.
The ultimate success would be the revival of history as an international orchestration. That’s when we might see real peace in the Middle East.

Some of the customs practiced by these disparate groups are also getting noticed, including the engagement habits of their peoples. In the US, it is customary for the man to get down on one knee to ask his beloved for her hand in marriage, presenting a diamond solitaire ring as a sign to her of his love and faithfulness. In some cases the woman will reciprocate by giving him a “promise ring” but this trend is still very uncommon.
How will you propose marriage? Will you be upholding time-honored traditions or will you seek to blend in modern methods or even your own personal twist? For fun, let’s take a look at some of the engagement practices of people all across the world.
When a man proposes to a woman in Spain, he does what many American men do: provide a pre-set diamond engagement ring to his heart throb. But, it doesn’t stop there: she’ll go out and find an engagement wristwatch and present that gift to him.
In Japan, it used to be customary for a matchmaker to bring young Japanese couples together. Today, that has changed as young people are finding each other, getting engaged, and a pre-set ring is presented. However, it is still customary to have the families of the engaged couple get together to exchange nine gifts, including dried bonito and abalone, in witness of their engagement. The groom then presents a generous betrothal gift (averaging more than $7300) to the bride’s family.
Brazilian couples will generally come together for a large engagement reception where the man gives to the woman a simple gold band which she wears on her right hand prior to marriage. During the wedding ceremony, the ring is moved to the left hand to signify that she is now married.
Customs in Nigeria vary according to tribe and religion, but some of the common practices still in vogue today include a ceremony where the groom’s family introduces themselves to the bride’s family and asks for their daughter’s hand in marriage to their son. In time’s past, the couple would be married immediately after the engagement ceremony, but current Nigerian law requires that the couple register with the government before marrying.
Couples in Egypt will exchange rings upon engagement and wear these same rings on their right hand until they are married, then move them to the left hand. During the engagement period, the man is responsible for securing a home – buying or renting a house or an apartment – and the home must include all the desired electrical appliances.
Though the couple is the most important part of the marriage covenant, some of the behind-the-scenes folks also play significant roles. For example, in China, many families still rely on the services of a matchmaker who determines if the prospective bride and groom are compatible astrologically. Many Americans who are familiar with the story, “Fiddler on the Roof” gained a glimpse of Jewish customs, particularly for Jews in Tsarist Russia. During that time, the Father picked the groom based on the recommendation of the matchmaker, but as in the case of they’ve, father of five daughters, the three oldest made sure that they had their say too.
Yes, the world may be changing and with these changes some customs are evolving as well. Though many young adults may want to do what is “new and different” many are honoring their families by honoring time-honored traditions. That pre-set diamond engagement ring can still be given, but as long as the remaining customs are upheld, then incorporating modern practices can still be enjoyed.

Norman Finkelstein, a Jewish American political scientist and author, specializing in Jewish-related issues and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in particular talks about the Lebanese militia Hezbollah and openly supports and praises their resistance: “They (Hezbollah) show courage, they show discipline, I respect that”
On Israeli defeat and consequential withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000, Finkelstein says:”But the reality was — and everyone understood it — that the Israeli attitude was: We are going to knock out Hizbullah. They began planning for a new war right after they were forced to leave in 2000. They found their excuse, their pretext, in July 2006, but there is no question among rational people that Israel was never going to let the Hizbullah victory go by.”
“There is no way that the United States and Israel are going to tolerate any resistance (to their hegemony) in the Arab world.”
On the damage caused to Lebanon as a result of the resistance: “It’s better to die on your feet than to walk crawling on your knees….how can I not respect those (Hezbollah) who say they would rather die on their feet? How can I not respect that?”
Finkelstein then goes on to slam the stances taken by some sell out Arabs who continue to admire George Bush like ‘Servants’ despite Bush being the man behind the carpet bombing of Lebanon and says that Bush should be classified as ‘persona non grata’:”Who (would) roll out the red carpet less than two years after your whole country was destroyed by them (the US)? ”
